Developers plan entertainment complex for Lumberton

LUMBERTON, N.C. – Developers are looking to build a multimillion dollar retail and entertainment complex in Robeson County.
Brooks Redfearn Developments wants to build on 257 acres of farmland along Interstate 95 between exits 19 and 20.
The project is called Brookstone Landing. Plans includes retail stores, restaurants, apartments, hotels and recreational facilities, including theaters and even possibly a Triple-A baseball team.
"We are trying to bring Home Depot, K&W, things of that nature to the area because we don't have any local,” said the director of sales and marketing for Brooks Redfearn, Alfonso Ferguson. “So, we are really trying to complete Lumberton and not make competition in the area."
Developers choose the site because it is almost halfway between New York and Florida. There are almost 1.7 million cars driving along I-95 every month and another 1.6 million people living within a 60-minute drive. Developers say that means there is plenty of business to go around.
The developers estimate it could bring $875 million of investment into the area, but more importantly, they say it will help the community.
"The important thing of it is what is being done for the community here, which is bringing jobs for the community as well as finances to the community." said Mae Graves, spokeswomen for Brooks Redfearn Developments
Shreem Thadani and her husband were excited when they first heard about the proposed development behind their hotel at exit 20, America's Best Value Inn.
"I think it was a fantastic idea, because we need that kind of development for sure because a lot of jobs involved here and people will get really settled in,” said Thadani. “It will help a lot."
Thadani hopes it will also help make Lumberton a destination for travelers instead of a pit-stop.
"So travelers can enjoy themselves coming to Lumberton,” said Thadani. “Right now, there is not much to do in Lumberton and they ask us and we have nothing much to tell them. So, this will be a good opportunity I think."
For now, the developers are working on making the dream a reality as they work on closing soon on buying the 257-acre parcel of land. They have not announced a date yet for a groundbreaking for the complex.
