CHARLOTTE -- Middle school students and their parents got a crash course in science, technology engineering and math at Passport to STEM. It's the third year for the program that invites area businesses to showcase the future of STEM careers.

This year, students got to check out CPCC's Advanced Technology Center.

"The kids get to touch things in the lab," said CMS STEM director Cindy Moss. "They can touch a sheep heart. There are all kinds of different opportunities, turbines, engines, see how the Speed Channel does broadcasting, all kinds of really cool stuff so that they stay motivated and take more math and science classes as they go through school."

Representatives from Time Warner Cable, Duke Energy, Piedmont Natural Gas and Speed Channel took part in the event. Time Warner Cable is the parent company of News 14 Carolina.
