CHARLOTTE—Area teachers are thinking up new ways to teach their students by learning from each other.

An annual STEM conference at UNC-Charlotte brings together Kindergarten through 12 educators from all over the region to share ideas about how to teach Science, Technology, Engineering and Math skills more effectively.

Some teachers say it is even possible to learn about science through a a rap video.

“[The rap video] was based around the water cycle and the weather and something that interests kids which is rap. They love to sing and to dance and to remember things in an engaging way,” said science teacher Linda Yoder.

Yoder said finding appealing ways to engage her students is important, even if it takes an unconventional method to help them grasp the concept. She is exchanging tips with this group of teachers at the STEM conference.

“Everyone who is a good educator is always looking for more exciting interesting ways to do things. We never can get good enough at what we do and we're always striving to be better
teachers,” said Yoder.

Yoder hopes the activities will inspire other teachers to shake up their lesson plans and roll out new ideas that will stick with their students for a lifetime.
