WINSTON-SALEM – Donations continue to pour in to sites across the state to help with the relief efforts in Haiti. The Winston Bone and Joint Surgical Associates already sent one surgeon and a plane full of supplies to the country. But what couldn't fit in the plane was left behind, and it's beginning to pile up.
Local businessman and pilot Joe Budd wanted to help and decided to fly Dr. Thomas Spangler to the Dominican Republic on his second trip transporting supplies. So doctors began collecting supplies to send along.
“A lot of it was donated by medical supply houses, bandages and that sort of thing, antibiotics, some of the local drug stores,” Dr. Kenneth Tomberlin, of Winston Bone and Joint, said. “They were able to take 1,000 pounds of medical supplies with them. That was just all they could carry.”
Tomberlin says they now have a lot of extra supplies that they'd like to be able to send to Haiti.
“A lot of people have contributed, and it would be a waste if we continue to have these in our hallway and not where it needs to go,” orthopedic surgeon Dr. Joseph Beneziano Jr. said.
And just when the surgeons thought all the equipment might not make it to Haiti, Budd showed up ready to load another plane full of supplies.
“Every drop makes an ocean, so this is my drop in an ocean of need, and I'm just glad that I can do that,” Budd said.
The American Red Cross says donating money, volunteering time and giving blood are the three best ways you can help victims of major disaster like the earthquake in Haiti.
