A person was shot and killed when someone tried to break into a home on Lanesboro Road in Marshville around 1 a.m. Thursday. The sheriff's office hasn't said whether the person was an intruder or resident. No arrests have been made.

Gay boys could soon be allowed in the Boy Scouts of America if the organization passes a resolution Thursday. More than 1,400 leaders are expected to vote at a national conference in Texas. The resolution allows only openly gay boys in the scouts. A ban would remain on gay adult scout leaders.

North Carolina Republican Sen. Richard Burr introduced Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx to the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation on Wednesday. The hearings are the first steps to him becoming the next U.S. Transportation Secretary. President Barack Obama nominated him for the post last month.

Raleigh police have three people in custody in connection with the death Melissa Huggins-Jones. She was found dead by her 8-year-old daughter more than a week ago. The suspects are expected to make their first appearances today.

More than a year after her mysterious disappearance, the Army has declared Fort Bragg soldier Spc. Kelli Bordeaux dead. Bordeaux was last seen on April 14, 2012 leaving the Froggy Bottoms bar in Fayetteville. The Army changed her status to deceased this week and notified her mother and husband.
