CHARLOTTE -- More than 400 new high-paying jobs are coming to the town of Davidson in northern Mecklenburg County.

An industrial distribution company from New York will build a new headquarters just off Interstate 77.

Davidson business leaders say they are thrilled that MSC Industrial Direct, a company that distributes metalworking and industrial supplies, will move to town this fall. The company will bring a headquarters and 400 jobs to the community.

“These are excellent jobs that pay outstanding salaries and tremendous employee benefits,” said Dale Carroll from the N.C. Department of Commerce.

The move will bring white-collar positions in accounting, IT, marketing and other fields. The average salary will be $79,000 a year.

“It's the very type of partner we love to welcome into the state of North Carolina,” said Carroll.

MSC executives say the town offers top notch people.

“Access to the best talent in the industry was a critical component, and we feel that Davidson will absolutely position us to hit that goal,” said Douglas Jones from MSC Industrial Direct.

The company will build a 188,000-square-foot service center on a site just off I-77.

Davidson, Mecklenburg County and the state used $14 million in incentives to win the project.

“I can't describe to you how fortunate we are that they have decided to come to your community, this county and our state,” said Carroll.

And company executives say they are fortunate to have found Davidson.

“It's kind of like a great unkept secret that we've stumbled across,” said Jones.

Construction on the new service center is expected to begin this fall. The facility will open in 2013, and MSC Industrial hopes to hire all of the 400 new workers within the next five years.
