Two drown after boat capsizes in east Charlotte pond

Police say two people apparently drowned in an east Charlotte pond when their boat capsized Saturday night. Family members reported the pair missing at about 9:30 p.m. and neighbors spotted a capsized boat in a pond off Williams Road.

Speed Street arrests down 50 percent from 2011

The third and final night of Speed Street is over and Charlotte-Mecklenburg police report they had no major incidents during this year's event. In the course of the three day event, from 5 p.m. Thursday through 3 a.m. Sunday, CMPD reports arresting 33 adults and 11 juveniles.

Sixteen people were on board a World War II aircraft that had a frightening landing Saturday at Charlotte/Douglas International Airport. No one was injured. News 14 Carolina was told the plane's landing gear collapsed. The crash caused a few delays as crews worked to remove the plane.

Employee shot by would-be robber after closing University area store

The 20-year-old woman was walking to her car around 10:30 p.m. Friday after leaving the Dollar Tree on University City Boulevard when a man walked up to her in the parking lot and demanded the night deposit. When she said she didn't have it, he fired and she was grazed by a bullet.

Three lanes reopen after down power lines briefly shut down I-85

Three lanes of Interstate 85 southbound were reopened after downed power lines closed the entire roadway for a short time Friday afternoon near Freedom Drive. All but the far right lane are now open to traffic. There's no word on the cause of the fallen power lines.

Ex-CMPD officer in prison on sexual assault charges to be released

A former Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting six women while on duty is being released from prison Friday. Marcus Jackson was sentenced to two years behind bars in 2010. He'll have to register as a sex offender.
