CHARLOTTE -- The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department graduated 34 new officers Friday morning. The new officers make up the 162nd class at the department.
They began the academy in August, and will hit the streets as early as Saturday. Chief Rodney Monroe says the new officers should be proud because the police academy is very competitive.
"For every one person we sit in a seat, we probably interview 100 candidates for that seat," he said. "We're very selective."
Monroe says they are almost at full staff. They will welcome another class into the academy in a few weeks, and those recruits will graduate right before the Democratic National Convention.
