Friday President Obama announced a compromise on the federal mandate requiring employers, even religious organizations, to provide contraceptives to workers who want them. Under the compromise, health insurers - not employers - will be required to offer and pay for women's' contraceptive care, including morning-after pills.

The full Board of Governors voted Friday to approve a tuition hike for the 17 campuses in the UNC system. The committee approved the increase Thursday. The measure means in-state undergrads will pay nearly $500 more next year.

Facing intense pressure, the White House has indicated that it is trying to come up with a compromise. Obama announced Friday he directed the Health and Human Services Department to push the compromise through.

The mother of murder victim Michelle Young took the stand in her son-in-law's murder re-trial Friday. Jason Young is being tried a second time for the murder of his pregnant wife in 2006. The judge in Young's first trial declared a mistrial when the jury deadlocked last summer.

Progress Energy is working to become more modern by retiring coal plants and building natural gas plants, beginning with one in Wayne County. The plant is scheduled to be finished sometime in 2013. The generating plant is a $900 million facility that Progress Energy officials said will be state-of-the-art.

For the second time this week, a police officer in Wake County has been involved in a shooting incident. The shooting happened in Cary, in the parking lot of the Buffalo Lanes Bowling Alley on High House Road. Maj. Tony Godwin said that police were trying to arrest someone following an investigation and the man tried to drive off.

A pedestrian was taken to the hospital Thursday night after being hit by a car at the intersection of Duraleigh and Pleasant Valley roads. It happened just before 7 p.m. The name and condition of the pedestrian is unknown, but we do know that person was taken to WakeMed.

Defense attorneys grilled an eyewitness who placed Jason Young on the road the day his wife was murdered. Young is charged with beating his pregnant wife to death in 2006. He has testified that he was in Virginia on a business trip when his wife was killed. In his first trial last year, Young said he never left the hotel the night he checked in. But a key state's witness disagreed.

The budget and finance committee of the UNC Board of Governors passed a recommendation Thursday by system president Tom Ross to raise tuition next year. The full board will vote Friday. The increase would average 8.8 percent or about $500 dollars for all universities. Some schools had requested a bigger hike to offset cuts in state funding.
