CAMERON, N.C. – A disabled combat veteran and his family took part in the groundbreaking for their dream home Monday.
Marine Sgt. Carlos Evans and his family were given the home through Operation: Coming Home, a joint volunteer project led by the Home Builders Association of Raleigh-Wake County and Triangle Real Estate and construction veterans.
Evans was wounded by an IED while deployed in Afghanistan. Monday was an emotional day for him and his family, as he not only received the home but was reunited with the man who saved his life that day.
"Seeing my buddies, it touches me in a very powerful way because what they did for me, they saved my life," said Evans.
"I missed him and it was a really tragic moment. I feel like he is a brother now. I just wanted to be here for him. I felt like I owed him that," Sgt. Jessy Maynard said.
Both men say its hard to not go back to the day Evans was on foot patrol in Afghanistan when he stepped on an IED that resulted in the loss of both of his legs above the knee and his left hand.
Evans says he thought his life was over but Maynard wouldn't let that be.
"I was keeping him alive. That is all i wanted to do," he said.
Maynard stood by his side as Evans, his wife and two daughters were recognized and given the gift of a new home.
The home is expected to be more than 2,400 square feet, with four bedroom and three full baths, and be handicap adapted for Evans and his family to enjoy.
"I'm excited about just having the space in my house, that I can be free. I don't feel that I am attached. I feel that i can just be a normal person," Evans said.
Evans says this journey has taught him to live life to the fullest. The home will be completed this December. For now, he will continue therapy at Walter Reed Hospital.
Operation: Coming Home has built three homes for wounded warriors. They hope to build two more next year.
