RALEIGH -- The Wake County Public School System is in a hiring freeze through the end of June. It includes all central services positions and nearly all school-based positions.
School administrators say the freeze will help keep the system from hiring too many people and then having to lay some of them off. But school leaders say they're still recruiting new employees for the fall.
"We will have positions after the freeze is lifted," said Stephen Gainey, the assistant superintendent for human resources. "We are making contact with high quality staff members to bring here when the freeze is lifted. We will have positions available and we will be in a position to hire those individuals."
Officials say the school system will fill open positions with employees under contract first. Then they'll look for new hires.
