Jack Britt football coach Richard Bailey was approved by the Scotland County Board of Education Monday evening for the head coaching job at Scotland High School. The Scotland County job became open when Chip Williams stepped down after guiding the Fighting Scots to the school's first 4A championship with a victory over Porter Ridge.

Ten schools across North Carolina made a final plea to keep their athletic conferences from drastically changing next year. On Tuesday, North Carolina High School Athletic Association board members heard appeals before the conference realignment plans are set in stone.

The long-standing tradition of Friday night high school football could soon receive some high level competition. A website that covers Clemson University sports reports the Atlantic Coast Conference and television partner ESPN are in talks to broadcast some ACC games on Friday evenings.

Three Broughton High School students made it official Wednesday, signing letters of intent to play college football. Running back Chris Mangum is heading to Virginia Tech, cornerback Jabari Crenshaw committed to Wingate, and linebacker Drew Davis will stay home and go to N.C. State.

Tarboro High School senior Todd Gurley, one of the top high school football players in the country, officially committed to the University of Georgia Friday. The running back had narrowed his choice down to a final four of North Carolina, Georgia, Clemson and N.C. State.

Jim Bob Bryant, the coach of the Havelock High School Rams, is the 2011 Prep football coach of the year. Bryant earned nearly a third of the 16 votes from sports writers across the state. The Rams finished the season undefeated and won the state 3-A championship.

It was one big celebration for the Page High School Pirates Monday, the first day back on campus following the weekend's big game. On Saturday, the Pirates capped off their undefeated season with a win against Garner in the 4-AA State Championship game, the first Page football team to win the title since the 1980's.

Austin Shuler's 5-yard touchdown run with 2:20 left helped Swain County beat Ayden-Grifton 20-14 for the Class 1AA North Carolina High School Athletic Association championship. Shuler finished with two TD runs for the Maroon Devils (15-1), who won their eighth state championship.
