CHARLOTTE – South Mecklenburg High School's Phillip Reed and Malcom Matthews are both 6-foot-9 and nearly 200 pounds, but that's where the similarities end for the Sabres' "twin towers."
For Reed, this year has been about adjusting to his new body. The junior was 6-foot-1 his freshmen year and got cut by coach John Fitch. He grew 8 inches since then and is still getting used to it.
“It's tough. You lose a lot of coordination. You have to work at it a lot to get coordinated. You're slower, its' awkward,” Reed said.
Matthews has always been tall. Averaging nearly a double-double, he's got natural ability that many high school players would dream to have. He just needs to keep focused on school and a game that has given him something to strive for.
“Last year's team, we had individual players ... but this year we work as a team to try to get the job done,” said Matthews.
Reed has the jumper that Matthews is working on, while Matthews passes along his post presence to the new big man. Theirs is a relationship that has benefitted both players as their team seems to be headed in the right direction after six straight losing seasons.
The Sabres are 15-4, having won their last two games by a combined 46 points.
Both players say they have to continue to work hard – Reed on his life on the court and Matthews on his life away from it.
