GREENSBORO — Two Guilford County neighborhoods were added to the National Register of Historic Places.

These two additions mark the 100th and 101st properties on the register from Guilford County, and it gives property owners a new incentive to renovate their buildings. Nearly 90-years-old, Sunset Hills now has a place on the national register of historic places.

"[It has] 100-year-old trees, and lots of nice walking sidewalks and big yards. It's nice to have a sidewalk on either side. It's really nice to go out and meet your neighbors when you're walking the dog,” said Sunset Hill Homeowner Association Historian Katherine Rowe.

Sunset Hills and some orther High Point neighborhoods became the 100th and 101st historic place in Guilford County.

"That's quite a feat. Guilford County has more historic district designations than any county other than Wake and Buncombe," said Preservation Greensboro Inc. Executive Director Benjamin Briggs.

However, it means more than just honor and recognition. For residents like Rowe, it is about protection from state and federal projects.

"We're next to several universities and there's lots of dorms being built around us so neighbors worry about encroachment," said Rowe.

The recognition also comes with tax credits for renovating homes and businesses.

"Renovations are critical for historic neighborhoods. You've got to keep reinvesting in buildings. It improves Greensboro's tax base and High Point's tax base but it also retains historic neighborhoods that are the character of Guilford County," said Briggs.

"You have a certain type of house and you want the other houses around there to reflect that same sort of architectural integrity," said realtor and Sunset Hills resident Michael Driver.

The designation also provides federal tax incentives for renovations at commercial properties in the neighborhood.
