Many of the early warning signs of disease are visible inside our mouths.

One of the most obvious problems is gum disease. Red, bleeding gums are usually a good giveaway. And that’s a very important one to find because more and more research is indicating that gum disease, or the bacteria that cause gum disease, can have a pretty significant impact on people's overall health. It can lead to an increased risk, of heart attack, of stroke. It can make diabetes significantly worse. In pregnant women it has been show to be linked to pre-term birth and even low birth-weight infants.

There are various other conditions that can be determined simply by looking at teeth, such as bruxism, grinding your teeth, is something that so many people do but do not even realize because it happens at night. Bruxism can be associated with things like sleep apnea-a condition at night where people stop breathing for short periods and that decreases the oxygen flow to their brain, hyper-sensitizes the nervous system and that can lead to various issues.

Another issue that can be seen acid reflux. Fifty to seventy-five percent of the people who suffer from acid reflux have absolutely no symptoms. But when a person’s teeth are exposed to acid for extended periods of time every night, it’s amazing the damage it does, just like sodas.
